If only I could control my breathing for a while, like the yogis.

India is miserably poor, too. Happiness, suffering, and death are all rolling around on the street, but travelers there don’t get depressed. There nobody thinks to lie. To somehow mistake these pictures for something else—to imagine, for instance, that this is a system created in the name of man.

Great idea, socialism: a system in which everyone is equal. If this system is aimed at man and his welfare, why does it create ugliness, poverty, and evil? Why does it export work camps, brutalist block apartments, and so much fear?

An idea that eats people.

Now it has snuck into this corridor, to die in peace.

I walk. I make progress through the concentrate. It lets me pass with difficulty, it scrapes my skin, my insides. Every particle of this air has its own physiognomy. I feel like I can make out those faces. The faces of millions of people not fulfilling their needs. Killed for the fact that they exist.

In the name of?

This stench. This musty, clogged corridor blows away all my defenses. I reach my room after a half hour, willing to commit whatever villainy just for a breath of fresh air. I can’t unlock the door. My hand is shaking. Finally—air! I’m breathing!
